College Placement & The Testing Center
Congratulations on enrolling at Jefferson! Sometimes a placement test is needed to make sure that you are placed in the right math and English classes. Placement tests are free and designed to help you succeed here at Jefferson.

Don’t wait to schedule your placement test! Classes are starting to fill and we want to make sure that you are getting in the correct classes. You can schedule your test below by clicking on the tab that says “Schedule My Test” and you can choose an available date. Feel free to call or email us with any questions at 315-755-0300 or thetestingcenter@sunyjefferson.edu . We are open Monday-Thursday from 8:30am - 3:30pm, Fridays from 10:00am - 3:00 pm.
How do I know if I need to test?
- If you graduated high school more than 5 years ago, you will have to take placement tests in both math and English/reading.
- If you graduated from high school within the last 2 years
- you will automatically be placed in an appropriate English, reading, and math class based on your high school grades. If you are not happy with your placement, you can also schedule a test.
Prepare for your test
- Online Accuplacer Test Prep
- Accuplacer iPhone App (highly recommended)
- Presentation with helpful videos and links - includes grammar, reading, essay structure and math videos

Visit our online appointment scheduler and pick a date and time that work for your schedule.
Arrive on time to your testing appointment. Please bring the following:
• Jefferson student J#
• Photo ID
• Pencil or pen
• Social security number

When and where do I take my test?
• Our testing center is located the first floor of the Deans Collaborative Learning
Center (building 15).
• Live more than 50 miles away from Jefferson? Please call us at (315) 755-0300 or email thetestingcenter@sunyjefferson.edu for more information about alternate or remote testing sites. Note: You will be responsible
for any fees charged by the alternate testing site. The Testing Center will email
you offsite testing procedures and study links. Please read directions carefully.
How do I request accommodations?
If you have a documented disability and require accommodations other than extended time (all tests are untimed), please call the placement testing office or email our Accommodative Services office.
Looking for CLEP or DANTES?
Jefferson Community College is a testing site for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and the DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) credit by exam programs. Earn college credit for what you have already learned through on-the-job training, professional development, military service, independent study, prior course work, cultural pursuits and internships.
Top 5 things to know about testing
1. You are not alone – testing is necessary for most incoming students!
2. It is true, tests are not always fun – but this one helps get you into the right
level classes so you can be successful!
3. Studying is not overrated. It will help you score higher on your test!
4. Testing is meant to be helpful and make you more successful in college – so don’t
stress!
5. If you do not score well – it’s ok. We have classes to help you get college-ready!

Understanding your test scores or placement
- Where can I find my placement? – Your test scores can be found in myJCC. If you have not yet logged into myJCC, you
should have received a Welcome email to your personal email address with information
for setting up your password and security information (multi-factor authentication
(MFA)). Once you are logged in, click on myJCC in the top left corner, click SOAR,
click Student tab, then Student Recordss and View Accuplacer Test Placements.
- Under test scores, the Test Description can be found on the left hand side and the Placement can be found on the right hand side.

- Reading – You will see a Placement of No Reading, CLS 099, or CLS 101
- CLS 099 is a required course for those students who, based on assessment testing, scores from the college placement test (CPT) and academic background, need to improve reading comprehension skills and strategies. The course offers instruction in critical reading and thinking strategies and supports students in developing these learning strategies by effectively applying what is learned.
- CLS 101 is designed to instruct students in effective reading skills and critical thinking skills that are essential to meet the demands of college-level courses.
- English – You may have taken a writing sample, which could impact this placement. If you took a writing sample, view Test Description for your course placement. –If you did not take a writing sample, you will have a placement of ENG 099, ENG 100, or ENG 101

- Basic Composition English 099 is required of students whose writing skills are identified as pre-college.
- ENG 100 College Composition is an introduction to academic writing.
- English 101 Research and Composition students will employ strategies and techniques for successful academic essay and research writing

the top of the page. Next, select View Accuplacer Test Placements located in the Student Records. **If you are a transfer student, you may not have a course placement due to transfer
